Americans, Chiefs & Merchants Grab Wednesday Wins

Elias Varnios had two hits and three RBI’s, and Jason Giagrande and Ryan Buccini added a couple of hits and an RBI each, to lead the Americans to a 6-5 win over Alibrandis at Morelli Field in Melrose. Ronnie Luke (3-2) got the relief win and Shawn Smeglin recorded his first save. Dave Lightbody had a homer and double for Alibrandis.

At Maplewood, Tim Dunphy (4-3) outdueled Jonathan Richard (2-6) when the Andre Chiefs edged the Somerville Royals 2-1. Kyle Dembrowski’s two RBI single in the sixth inning was the difference. It was Dunphy’s 50th career win in a Chiefs uniform. With the win the Chiefs secured the fifth seed in the upcoming ICL Playoffs.

In Wakefield, Robert Shaw (1-0) got the win in relief of Mike Andrews as the Merchants beat the Malden Maddogs 6-2 in a darkeness shortened six inning affair at Walsh Field. The Merchants will be the third seed in the ICL Playoffs.
