Freni K’s 16 for Chiefs, Smeglin Sharp for Melrose, Blue Sox & Merchants Win
Jared Freni struck out 16 batters and fired a two-hitter when the Chiefs beat the Somerville Royals 8-1 on Wednesday at Maplewood. Mike Andre went 3-4 and added four RBI’s, Peter Copa 2-3 with two RBI’s, and Johnny Welch had two doubles for the Chiefs. Freni raised his record to 3-1 with the win.
Kyle Devin drove in Nick Herzog in the bottom of the first inning with the game’s only run when the Americans shutout the Arlington Trojans 1-0 at Morelli. Shawn Smeglin (1-1) allowed just three hits in six innings to record the win. Mike Peters worked the seventh to pick up his first save.
In Lexington, Edaurdo Soto delivered a bases loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning when the Blue Sox walked off with a 4-3 extra inning win over the Reading Bulldogs. Jeff Blout (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Kelvin Guzman.
The Wakefield Merchants overcame a 7-1 third inning deficit when they scored nine unanswered runs, including eight in the top of the fifth inning, on the way to a 10-7 win over the Reds in Watertown. Bobby Losanno led the way at the plate with three hits while Scott Searles and Dillion Koster added two each. The Reds built their lead on home runs from Dan Chaisson and Chris Lanzilli. Steve Keskinidis (2-0) got the win and Joseph Maguire recorded his third save.
