Bulldogs & Chiefs Win, Americans-Reds Play to 4-4 Tie

The Reading Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 third inning lead before going on to beat the Arlington Trojans 8-3 on Monday night at Endicott College. Johnny Hayes hit a two-run homer and Rosario Missiti had a couple of RBI’s for the Bulldogs. Mike Curtis (1-0) went five innings to get the win. Jared Freni (2-0), fired a 12 strikeout two-hitter when the Andre Chiefs shutout the Wakefield Merchants 4-0 at Maplewood. Peter Copa and Mike Andre each had an RBI single for the Chiefs and Dan Monagle had a seventh inning triple for the Merchants. Joe Westerman (1-2) allowed only six hits but took the loss. The Melrose Americans and Watertown Reds played to 4-4 tie at Bentley University. Dillon Corliss and Matt Horan each went five innings respectively. Zeke Berg and Nick Herzog had two hits each for the Americans. Liam O’Connor (three hits, double, RBI), and Jon Barber, Dan Chaisson, and Justin Forman recorded two hits for the Reds. Two ICL games are on the schedule for Tuesday. The Blue Sox host the Americans in Lexington at 8:00 PM and the Chiefs will visit the Royals at Trum Field in Somerville in an 8:15 PM start.

Royals, Trojans & Bulldogs Prevail in Father’s Day Action

Ryan Covelle (2-0) went six innings, allowing only four hits and striking out seven, when the Somerville Royals beat the Wakefield Merchants 4-2 at Walsh Field on Sunday. Luke Ronchi led the Royals at the plate with a double and triple and George Crowley had two hits and an RBI. Wyatt Stanley struck out two in the seventh to record the save. Jonathan Pierce had two of the Merchants hits. In Arlington, John Smokovich (1-0) threw 6.1 innings to get the win as the Trojans beat the Watertown Reds 7-3.  Kyle Hood, Ben Johnson, and Kyle Bourdrias had two RBI each and Ryan Hood added a couple of hits for Arlington. Jonathan Bishop (1-2) took the loss. Will Brennan had two of the Reds’ seven hits. The Reading Bulldogs edged the Lexington Blue Sox 5-4 at Endicott College. Wayne Lundgren (1-1) struck out six in six innings and Colby Morris picked up his first save. Kyle Devin and Mike Taylor led Reading with three hits and Jordan Roper added two more to the Bulldogs’ twelve hit offense. Drew Leenhouts (0-1) was tagged with the loss. On Monday, the Melrose Americans and the Reds meet at Bentley University at 6:00 PM, the Trojans visit the Bulldogs at Endicott College at 8:00 PM, and the Chiefs host the Merchants at Maplewood/Malden Catholic in an 8:15 PM start.

Chiefs, Royals, Reds & Blue Sox Win in annual Jerie DeAngelis Day of Baseball

Offense was the theme of the day as five of the eight ICL teams hit double digits in the annual Jerie DeAngelis Memorial Day of Baseball that was played in Lexington on Saturday. In the opener, the Andre Chiefs rung out 15 hits on the way to a 10-4 win over the Wakefield Merchants. Tim Dunphy (2-0) went the distance to pick up the win. Danny DiMare had two hits and three RBI’s and Peter Copa had two hits and two RBI’s to lead the Chiefs’ offense. Steve Gambale added three singles and Tony Serino, Mike Burgoyne, and Mike DiCato, chipped in two hits each. Scott Searles and Josh Band picked up two hits apiece for the Merchants. In the second game of the day, Sean McPhee drove in four runs and Wagner Gomez added three more RBI when the Somerville Royals came back to edge the Arlington Trojans, 11-10.  Somerville jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the third only to see Arlington put up a half dozen runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.  The Trojans led heading into the seventh 10-8 before the Royals rallied for three runs to take the win. Paul Pollano (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Mike Masuli. Rob Caggiano added two hits and two RBI for the Royals. Mark Webber had a 4 for 5, 3 RBI game, and Morgan Brown recorded two hits and two RBI’s for Arlington. The Watertown Reds exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning, and broke open a close game, before going on to beat the Reading Bulldogs 16-1 in the third game. Bill Sullivan (2-0) went five innings and picked up his second win of the season. Along with Dante Padovani, the Reds’ pitching duo scattered seven hits and struck out six Reading batters in the game. In the nightcap, Aidan Freeburg, Alsis Herrara, Elvin Florentino, and Bill Christopher, combined on a two-hitter, with 12 strikeouts, when the Lexington Blue Sox shutout the Melrose Americans, 10-0. Herrara (1-0) was credited with the win and Freeburg struck out seven in just three innings. The Blue Sox had 13 hits in the game led by Alex Voitik and Josh Hassel who each had three hits and two RBI’s.  

Burke Gets 3rd Win for Reading Bulldogs

In Thursday’s lone game, Jack Burke became the first ICL pitcher in 2016 to get his third win when the Reading Bulldogs knocked off the Arlington Trojans 7-1 at Endicott College in Beverly. Burke, who raised his record to a perfect 3-0, went six innings, struck out nine, and allowed six hits. Johnny Hayes had a couple of RBI and Zac Talis had two hits and an RBI to lead the Bulldogs, who jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and never looked back. There are two games on Friday’s agenda. The Chiefs travel to Summer Street Field in Arlington to visit the Trojans at 7:00 PM and the Bulldogs are right back at Endicott for an 8:00 PM date with the Wakefield Merchants.
