Blue Sox Sweep Bulldogs to Take 2025 Championship

Merchants-Alibrandis, Chiefs-Blue Sox Start Semifinals Tonight

Both of the Intercity League’s semifinal series will begin tonight.(Wednesday) The #3 Wakefield Merchants and #2 Alibrandis will begin their best of three series at Victory Field in Watertown starting at 7:30 PM. Game two will be played on Thursday at Morelli Field in Melrose at 7:30 PM. If a game three is required, it will be contested back at Victory Field on Friday at 7:30 PM. Wakefield reached the semifinal by beating the Malden Madoogs two games to none in the first round. Alibrandis earned a first round bye with their second place finish in the regular season. No introductions will be required in Lexington when the number #5 Chiefs and #1 Blue Sox meet at 7:45 PM. The Chiefs and Blue Sox have met in the ICL Championship Round seven times in the past ten years. Game two will be played on Thursday at Pine Banks located on the Malden/Melrose line at 7:45 PM. A potential game three would be in Lexington on Friday at 7:45 PM. The Chiefs got to the semifinal round by sweeping the Reading Bulldogs. The Blue Sox won the regular season pennant and received a first round bye. The winners of these series will meet in the best of five championship round. All games in the championship series will be played at Morelli Field in Melrose.

Merchants & Chiefs Sweep into Final Four

The Wakefield Merchants and Andre Chiefs both won on Monday night and will now move on to the best of three semi-finals which began on Wednesday night. The Merchants rode the strong pitching of James McNamara to beat the #6 Malden Maddogs 4-1 at Morelli Field. The Merchants got a homer and double from Bobby Lossano and two hits and an RBI from Dillon Koster to pace their offense. McNamara allowed just four hits in his complete game effort. Zak Levine took the loss for the Maddogs. The #3 Merchants will now play #2 Alibrandis. Game one of that series is scheduled to begin Wednesday night at Victory Field in Watertown at 7:30 PM. At Maplewood, Evan Walsh held the #4 Reading Bulldogs hitless over the first five innings, and ended up with a three-hitter, in the Chiefs 6-1 win. Ben Waldrip led the Chiefs’ offense with a three for four night, that included two doubles and an RBI, and Nick Leva chipped in with two hits and an RBI. Walsh struck out 12 and allowed only an unearned run in the top of the seventh when Matt Debenedetto scored on a throwing error after doubling. Anthony Sapienza gave up just four hits in 3.2 innings but took the loss. The #5 Chiefs will now take on the #1 Lexington Blue Sox. Game one of that series is scheduled to begin Wednesday night at Lexington High at 7:45 PM.

Chiefs & Merchants Take Series Openers

The Andre Chiefs and the Wakefield Merchants took 1-0 leads in the their respective best of three first round series on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs got a complete game outing from righty Zach Kirby to beat the Reading Bulldogs at Morton Field 6-3. Ben Waldrip led the Chiefs’ offense with a homer and two RBI’s while Kyle Dembrowski (single) and Andrew Caulfield (fielders’ choice) each had an RBI for the Chiefs. Tyler Cedneo had two hits, including an RBI double, for the Bulldogs. Kirby allowed five hits and struck out 11. Jack Wallace went three innings and was charged with the loss and Kyle Wollman worked the final four frames. The duo allowed just four hits but were victimized by three errors. Game two of the series will be played at Maplewood on Monday at 8:00 PM. The Merchants beat the Malden Maddogs 3-1 at Walsh Field. Joseph Maguire tossed a four-hitter to lead the Merchants to the win. The Merchants scored all of their runs in the bottom of the third inning as veterans Bobby Losanno and Mike Sorrentino drove home the runs. The Merchants erased a 1-0 Maddogs’ lead as a Derek Bauer RBI scored Jack Wharf in the top of the inning. Sorrentino ended up with two of the Merchants six hits and two RBI’s. Wharf and Kevin Alexy had a couple of hits each for the Bulldogs. Maguire, who was 6-3 in the regular season, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. Blaine McLean went the distance for Malden and allowed just six hits. Game two of the Malden-Wakefield series will be played at Morelli Field in Melrose on Monday at 8:00 PM.

Maddogs Get 6th Seed with 7-0 Win Over Royals in Friday’s Play-in Game

The Malden Maddogs broke a 0-0 tie, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning, and went on to beat the Somerville Royals 7-0 in Friday night’s play-in game at Morelli Field in Melrose. With the win, the Maddogs grab the sixth seed in the ICL Playoffs. They will now move on to meet the #3 Wakefield Merchants in a first round series that begins on Sunday at Walsh Field at 3:00 PM. The other first round series will also get underway on Sunday. The #5 Andre Chiefs will visit the #4 Reading Bulldogs at Morton Field/Reading HS starting at 4:00 PM. The Lexington Blue Sox and Alibrandis, both who earned first round byes, will await the winners.
