Chiefs, Merchants & Reds Pick-up Wednesday Wins

Jared Freni (5-2) struck out 12 in six innings, and Tim Dunphy picked up the save, when the Andre Chiefs took a 4-2 win over the Lexington Blue Sox at Maplewood. Tony Serino had a two RBI single and Johnny Welch hit a solo homer for the Chiefs. Ross Curley and Thomas Russo each had an RBI and two hits for the Blue Sox. In Wakefield, Joseph Maguire (2-2) went the distance, striking out eight, when the Merchants beat the Arlington Trojans 6-2 at Walsh Field. Mark Webber had a big night at the plate going 3-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI’s. Bobby Losano added a solo homer for the Merchants. At Morelli, the Watertown Reds erased an 8-4 seventh inning lead, scoring 11 runs in the top of the seventh, to get a 15-8 win over the Melrose Americans. Will Breenan, Dan Chaisson, and Cal Cristofori, all had homers for the Reds. Nate Beck (2-1) picked up the win. The Reading Bulldogs-Somerville Royals game that was scheduled to be played at Lexington High School was postponed due to a light failure.

Americans & Chiefs Record Monday Night Wins

Chris Hopkins, Matt Hosman, and John Jennings each had doubles and two RBI to lead the Melrose Americans to 7-1 win over the Reading Bulldogs at Morelli Field. Chris Mitchell (4-2) went 5.1 innings to get the win with help from Aran Hamilton-Grenham, who pitched the last 1.2 innings to record the save. In Malden, Josh Desai threw a complete game four-hitter, and Peter Copa belted a grand slam, when the Andre Chiefs scored seven times in the fourth inning to beat the Wakefield Merchants 9-2. Mike Andre and Mike Burgoyne each had two hits for the Chiefs. Mark Webber drove in both of the Merchants runs with a third inning triple and a fifth inning single. Desai, now 3-0, struck out seven. On Tuesday, the Somerville Royals host the Arlington Trojans at Trum Field at 8:15 PM in the only ICL game on the schedule.

Royals-Reds Split Doubleheader, Reds & Americans Win on Sunday

The Somerville Royals and Reading Bulldogs split a doubleheader on Sunday with the Royals winning the opener 8-7 and the Bulldogs taking the nightcap 4-2. In the first game, Sean Cameron, Sean Harrington, and Adam Johnson, had two hits each to back the pitching of Toby Stern (1-0), who went three innings to pick up the win. Zac Talis had a homer and three RBI’s for the Bulldogs. In game two, Alex Mandrus (1-0) threw 6.1 innings to get the win, and Zac Levine closed things out to get the save, in the Bulldogs’ victory. Chris Seidl had two RBI’s and Steve Busby and Cory DiLoreto each had a couple of hits. In Wakefield, Shawn Smeglin tossed a neat four hitter when the Melrose Americans defeated the Merchants 5-1. Malcolm Nachmanoff and Matt Hosman each had two hits and an RBI for Melrose. In other Sunday action, the Watertown Reds beat the Arlington Trojans 4-2 at Summer Street Field. On Monday, the Americans host the Bulldogs at Morelli Field in Melrose at 7:30 PM and the Merchants visit the Andre Chiefs at Maplewood/Malden Catholic starting at 8:15 PM.

Doubleheader in Reading, Games in Arlington & Wakefield on Sunday Schedule

The Reading Bulldogs will host the Somerville Royals at Morton Field in Reading in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM. In other Sunday games, the Wakefield Merchants and Melrose Americans meet at Walsh Field in Wakefield and the Arlington Trojans host the Watertown Reds at Summer Street Field. Both of these games will begin at 4:00 PM.

Watertown Reds & Arlington Trojans Take Friday Night Wins

Nate Beck tossed a complete game five-hitter to lead the Reds to a 3-0 shutout win over the Melrose Americans in Watertown. Beck (1-1) struck out six. Cal Cristofori led the Reds with a homer and two RBI and Justin Forman drove in the other run. Zach Begin (1-1) took the loss despite allowing just four hits in his six innings of work. In Arlington, Andrew Hamel scattered five hits and struck out six when the Trojans walked off with a 3-2 seventh inning win over the Somerville Royals. There are no ICL games scheduled on Saturday.  

Blue Sox Blank Reds 9-0 in Thursday’s Only Game

Ryan Filipowicz and Matt Karis combined on a three-hit shutout, the second straight shutout for Lexington, when the Blue Sox shutout the Reds 9-0 in Watertown. It was the only game scheduled. The Blue Sox broke it open with six runs in the 4th. Alex Voitik doubled in the first two runs and Dorian Rojas singled to drive in two more.  Jeff Costello (3 hits, 2 RBI) paced the Sox offense. Filipowicz (2-0) set down 16 straight Reds from the second through the  sixth innings. Two ICL games are scheduled for Friday. The Somerville Royals visit the Arlington Trojans at Summer Street Field at 7:00 PM and the Reds host the Melrose Americans at Victory Field at 7:45 PM.

Former Melrose American Chris Sharpe Doing Well in Pirates System

Former Melrose American Chris Sharpe, who was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 14th round of last month’s MLB Draft, has been assigned to West Virginia of the New York-Penn League. He has already appeared in seven games for the Black Bears. Sharpe, who was the Intercity League Rookie of the Year in 2015 while playing third base for the Americans, was drafted as a center fielder out of the University of Lowell. He starred for the River Hawks in 2017, leading the team with an average of .338. He also homered 7 times while driving in 28 runs.

Chiefs Hold on to Beat Royals 8-6 at Trum

The Chiefs opened up a 6-0 fourth inning lead and then held on to beat the Royals 8-6 in Somerville on Tuesday night. Mike Andre had a double, single, and three RBI’s, Matt Nuzzo hit a solo homer, and Peter Copa had two hits and scored three times to lead the Chiefs offense. Jared Freni (4-2) went 5.1 innings and struck out 11 to get the win with help from Mitchell Clegg (1.2 innings, 3 K’s) who recorded the save. Jake Cintolo went 3-3 and Wagner Gomez had a two RBI triple for the Royals. It was the only ICL game scheduled.

Leenhouts 1-Hitter, Dunphy 4-Hitter, Reading Walk-off, Key Monday Action

Drew Leenhouts came within one out of a no-hitter when the Lexington Blue Sox shutout the Melrose Americans 3-0 at Morelli Field. John Jennings’ double in the bottom of the seventh broke up the no-hit bid. Jake Willsey and Dorian Rojas had RBI singles for the Blue Sox. Leenhouts (1-0) struck out seven. At Maplewood, Tim Dunphy (2-0) spun a four-hitter, outdueling Mike Andrews (0-3), as the Andre Chiefs edged the Arlington Trojans 2-1. Hits from Mike Andre and Nate Witkowski gave the Chiefs the lead in the fifth inning. Jeff Besozzi’s single drove in Kyle Bourdrias (double) with the Arlington run in top of the fourth. The Reading Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a 3-2 win over the Wakefield Merchants at Endicott College. Chris Bosco had three hits, and Kevin Marciano, Corey DiLoreto, and Darren Hartwell, had two each for the Bulldogs. Bobby Losanno had a solo homer for the Merchants. Jack Theriault (3-2) picked up the win in relief of Alex Mandrus. The Chiefs visit the Somerville Royals at Trum Field starting at 8:15 PM in the only ICL contest that is scheduled for Tuesday.

Chiefs, Americans, Reds, & Bulldogs, Gain Sunday Wins

Joe Saia (1-0) went the distance, picking up his first ICL win, and Matt Nuzzo had a four for five afternoon with two doubles and four RBI, when the Chiefs handed the Merchants a 14-5 loss in Wakefield. Johnny Welch (3-5, 2 RBI’s), Shane Stande (2-3, 2 RBI’s), Nate Witkowski (2-4, 2 RBI’s), Mike Burgoyne (2-4, 2 RBI’s) and Mike Barbati (2-4) led the Chiefs 16 hit offense. Anthony Cecere had two RBI’s for the Merchants. In Melrose, the Americans scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a come from behind 6-4 win over the Arlington Trojans at Morelli Field. Nick Herzog had a huge day at the plate for the Americans going 3-4 with a homer, a double, and four RBI’s. Malcolm Nachmanoff backed Herzog’s effort with a 3-4 day of his own that included a double and an RBI. Aran Hamilton-Grenham (1-0) picked up the win with 1.2 innings of relief. Jonathan Bishop (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, going five innings and scattering eight hits, to lead the Reds to a 3-0 blanking of the Somerville Royals in Watertown. Will Brennan, Dan Chaisson, and Kevin Kelley, drove in the runs for the Reds. Kyle LaVigne had a 2-2 day at the plate and scored two runs. Sean Mahan recorded the two inning save. The Reading Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning, erasing a 4-3 Lexington lead, to beat the Blue Sox 6-4 at Endicott College. Mike DeDonato led the Bulldogs with a 2-4 evening that included a homer and three RBI’s. Colby Morris (2-1) went six innings to pick up the win and Jack Theriault threw a hitless seventh to get the save.
