Americans Win in 8th, Reds’ Dama Fires Shutout, Chiefs Beat Blue Sox

The Melrose Americans scored three times in the top of the eighth inning, to break a 3-3 tie, and went on to beat the Wakefield Merchants 6-4 at Walsh Field. Dan Cacciola had two hits and two RBI, Anthony Licciardello had two hits and an RBI, and Austin Masel with two hits, including a triple, led the Americans at the plate. Shawn Smegiln (1-3) went 7.1 innings to get the win and Kyle Autilio recorded the save. Lou Tarrantino had two hits with an RBI for the Merchants. Watertown’s Aric Dama (5-1) got his ICL best fifth win when he shutout the Reading Bulldogs on three hits, 1-0 at Victory Field. Justin Forman, who had two doubles in the game, drove in Sean Callahan-Montague with the Reds’ run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dama struck out five and didn’t issue a walk. Jack Burke (4-2) pitched well for Reading but took the loss. At Maplewood, brothers Matt (3 innings) and Mike (4 innings) DiCato handled the pitching duties and Juan Portes hit a three run homer to lead the Andre Chiefs to a 6-4 win over the Lexington Blue Sox. Mike DiCato (4-1) got the win while Jimmy Hill (1-2) was tagged with the loss. Peter Copa had an RBI double and Steve Gamable had two hits and an RBI for the Chiefs. Justin Silvestro had two hits and an RBI for the Blue Sox. There are no ICL games on Thursday.

Reds & Blue Sox Prevail in Tuesday’s ICL Action

The Watertown Reds got two home runs from Will Brennan on the way to beating the Melrose Americans 10-3 at Morelli Field. Bill Sullivan (4-0) picked up the win for the Reds. At Trum Field, Tony Annino (2-1) threw 5.1 strong innings of relief, striking out 10, to lead the Lexington Blue Sox to a 6-1 win over the Somerville Royals. Thomas Russo and Frank Frias each had a two run single for the Blue Sox. Wyatt Stanley (1-2) took the loss.

Blue Sox & Chiefs in Monday Wins

Justin Silvestro’s two run single in the bottom of the fifth inning was the key hit when the Blue Sox edged the Reading Bulldogs 3-2 in Lexington. Matt Karis (1-1) went six strong innings to get the win and Chris Law recorded his fourth save of the year. Mike DeDonato had an RBI triple and Kyle Devin added two hits for the Bulldogs. Wayne Lundgren (3-2) took the loss. At Maplewood, the Chiefs scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and beat the Trojans 4-1. Mitchell Clegg (3-3) outdueled Evan Walsh to get the complete game win. Mike Burgoyne led the Chiefs’ offense with two hits, including a two RBI double, and two runs scored. On Tuesday, the Americans host the Watertown Reds at Morelli Field in Melrose at 7:30 PM and the Blue Sox visit the Somerville Royals at Trum Field at 8:15 PM.

Sunday Recap: Reds Sweep, Bulldogs, Sox & Royals Win

The Watertown Reds swept a doubleheader against the Wakefield Merchants at Walsh Field, taking the first game 9-2 and then winning the nightcap 11-4. In Reading, the Bulldogs rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come back and beat the Andre Chiefs 8-7. Mike DeDonato had two hits and two RBI’s for Reading and Peter Copa hit a three run homer for Andre. The Lexington Blue Sox shutout the Americans 5-0 in Melrose.  Borja Jones Berasaluce (2-0) got the win for the Blue Sox. At Trum Field, Jake Cintolo went four for four, including two doubles, and Cal Carroll (1-0) picked up the win, when the Somerville Royals beat the Arlington Trojans 8-5.

Blue Sox Win on Thursday, Bulldogs & Trojans Chalk Up Friday Scores

Jeff Vigurs had four hits, including two doubles, to lead the Blue Sox to a 9-4 win over the Arlington Trojans on Thursday night in Lexington. Justin Silvestro and Kevin Davis each added two hits as Drew Leenhouts (3-1) picked up the win. On Friday, Kyle Devin had two RBI’s, Mike DeDonato two doubles, and Harry Oringer two hits, to help get the Reading Bulldogs past the Melrose Americans 6-4 at Endicott College. Mike Curtis (2-0) got the win with 3.1 innings and Zac Levine was credited with his first save. Also on Friday, the Somerville Royals edged the Trojans 4-3 at Summer Street Field. There are no ICL games on Saturday.

Wednesday’s Recap of ICL Games

Wins by the Somerville Royals, Melrose Americans, Lexington Blue Sox, and Andre Chiefs highlighted Wednesday night’s full slate of four ICL games. In Wakefield, the Royals banged out 15 hits, led by Wagner Gomez who had a 3-3 evening with a homer and a couple of RBI’s, on the way to an 8-5 win.  Rob Caggiano, Luke Ronchi, B.J. Neil, and Curtis Tirone each had two hits for Somerville. Wyatt Stanley (1-1) got the win. Austin Masel and Tom Petry had three hits apiece and Dave Center and Isiah Berg each homered when the Americans unleashed a 15 hit attack of their own in an 11-3 win over the Trojans at Morelli Field. Kyle Autilio (1-1) went six innings to record the win. The Lexington Blue Sox got five strong innings from Aidan Freeburg (3-1) and beat the Watertown Reds 4-1 at Victory Field. Alex Voitik hit his third homer of the season to pace the Blue Sox offense. Aric Dama (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season in a complete game effort. Chris Law picked up his third save of the year when working a scoreless seventh for the Blue Sox. At Maplewood, the Chiefs were down to their last out before a Nate Witkowski game tying single and a Mike Barbati game winning double gave them an 8-7 win over the Reading Bulldogs. The Chiefs erased Reading leads of 4-1, 5-3 and 7-6 to record the comeback win. Witkowski led the Chiefs with three hits, and Ryan Sonberg and Barbati each added two hits. Kyle Devin, Zac Talis, and E.J. Martinez, had two each for the Bulldogs. Mike DiCato (3-1) got the win for the Chiefs in relief of Anthony DeSouza.

Reds & Royals Gain Tuesday Night Wins

Bill Sullivan (3-0) allowed just four hits when the Watertown Reds came from behind to beat the Blue Sox 6-3 in Lexington. Will Brennan had four hits and Mike Samko two hits to lead the Watertown offense. Both Brennan and Samko each had a double in the Reds’ three run seventh inning. Taylor Ferguson drove in two of Lexington’s runs with a fourth inning single. In Somerville, the Royals rode the pitching of Chuck Gibson (1-2) and Cal Carroll on the way to knocking off the Andre Chiefs 3-1. Jake Cintolo went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate, including a triple, for the Royals.  

Lundgren Gets Win for Bulldogs, Chiefs Walk Off in the 9th

Wayne Lundgren (3-1) threw six innings of one-hit, six strikeout ball, and Cody Hall got the save, to lead the Reading Bulldogs to a 3-1 win over the Wakefield Merchants at Endicott College. Kyle Devin, with a solo homer, and Nick Berno, with an RBI single, led the way for the Bulldogs at the plate. Mike Sorrentino drove in Josh Band (triple) with the Merchants only run in the top of the seventh. At Maplewood, Nate Witkowski’s single with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Chiefs a 6-5 walk off win over the Americans. The Americans took a 5-1 lead in the game on an Isaiah Berg three run homer. Tim Dunphy (3-0-1) got the win with 6.1 innings of relief pitching. Two ICL games are scheduled on Tuesday. The Watertown Reds and Blue Sox battle in Lexington at 8:00 PM and the Chiefs visit the Somerville Royals at Trum Field in an 8:15 PM start.

Bulldogs Sweep, Blue Sox Win in 9th, Kirby 3-Hitter Wins for Americans

The Reading Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from the Somerville Royals 7-1 and 10-1 at Endicott College in Beverly on Sunday. Tim Woods (1-0) threw a complete game five-hitter in the opener. Zac Talis had four hits, including a double, and Nick Berno added three hits for Reading. George Crowley accounted for the only Royals’ run with a solo home run.  In the nightcap, Anthony Dally (2-0) allowed just four hits in six innings to get the win. Kyle Devin led the way at the plate with three hits. In Arlington, the Lexington Blue Sox scored six times in the top of the ninth on the way to a 7-1 extra inning win over the Trojans. Alex Voitik had a two run triple and Jeff Blount pitched two innings of one-hit baseball to get the win. Zack Kirby (2-1) allowed just three hits and struck out ten when the Melrose Americans beat the Watertown Reds 4-2 at Victory Field.  Austin Masel had a triple and two RBI’s for the Americans. Christian Rosati and Nick Herzog drove in the other Americans’ runs. There are two ICL games scheduled on Monday. The Bulldogs host the Wakefield Merchants at Endicott College at 8:00 PM and the Americans visit the Andre Chiefs at Maplewood/Malden Catholic at 8:15 PM.

Intercity League wins third Eastern Mass Amateur Baseball Classic

Intercity League wins Amateur Baseball Classic for third time First league to win consecutive titles By Bruce Hack Lexington Blue Sox Media Relations Director   Melrose – The Intercity League hosted the Fifth Eastern Mass Amateur Baseball Classic and again played the role of poor hosts as they won 6-3 over the Cranberry League in a rain-shortened five-inning contest at Morelli Field. The ICL hosted the inaugural event in 2012 at Lexington High School and defeated the Cranberries 6-5 for the title. Last year the ICL won 6-3 over the Yawkey League at Brockton’s Campanelli Stadium. The hosts struck for four runs in the first, the biggest first inning in tournament history, as all nine batters came to the plate. Mike Burgoyne (Andre Chiefs) started the inning with a single to right and moved to second on a walk to Jon Barber (Watertown Reds). After an infield out moved both runners up, Zac Talis (Reading Bulldogs) walked to load the bases for Watertown’s Dan Chaisson. The slugging third baseman doubled down the right field line to drive in two runs and it was 2-0 ICL. After the second out, Kyle Boudrais (Arlington Trojans) singled to center to drive in Talis and Chaisson and it was 4-0 Intercity League. The offense struck again for the ICL in the second inning. After two infield outs, Scott Searles (Wakefield Merchants) doubled to right. Talis walked again, and Chaisson singled to right to plate Searles and it was 5-0. Watertown first baseman Justin Forman drove in Talis with a single to left for the 6-0 lead. Chaisson was a unanimous choice for Tourney MVP. On the day, he was 3-for-3 with three RBI, and a run scored. He drove in three of the first five ICL runs in the championship game. Reading Bulldogs pitcher Wayne Lundgren started the championship game and pitched two shutout innings for the win. He gave up two hits and struck out three. Lundgren set down the first five batters he faced, three by K. He did not allow a ball out of the infield, until consecutive singles snapped the streak. Sam Kasten (Andre Chiefs), who in his two innings of work also struck out three, walked one, and gave up the first CBL run when Tyler Beach singled to score Marc Doyle, followed Lundgren on the mound. The Cranberries cut the lead to 6-3 on a two-run single by Matt Nicholson off Mike Curtis (Reading Bulldogs) in the fourth inning. This year’s tournament had seven inning games, instead of nine, as in the past. Due to that the championship game started almost an hour ahead of schedule, but unfortunately still was cut short by the rain. Intercity League players had taken the field for the top of the sixth when the skies opened up and the rain came pouring down. The teams waited for 15 minutes and then the umpires declared the game called. In the first game of the day the Intercity League defeated the Boston Park League 6-3 (sound familiar) to move into the championship game for the third time in five years.   Ben Johnston (Arlington Trojans) had a bases-clearing triple in the second inning to give the host team a 3-0 lead. The ICLers added two runs on a double by Searles and an RBI single by Tom Petry (Melrose Americans) for a 5-3 lead in the fifth. They closed out their scoring with an RBI single by Barber in the sixth that scored Kyle Devin (Reading Bulldogs). The Park League chipped away at the Intercity’s 3-0 lead and tied it in the fourth with their third consecutive one-run inning. With one out in the fourth, the Parkers had three consecutive singles, with JP Knight driving in Sam Miller to knot the score at 3-3. Knight’s RBI double put the Park League on the scoreboard in the second inning as he drove in Grant Bowen. In the second the Park League’s Chris Hoyt leadoff with a walk, stole second and took third on a throwing error. He scored on an infield out by Alex Venditti. Lexington manager Rick DeAngelis guided the ICL All-Stars to victory for the second time. He also led the squad in 2012. Melrose manager Kevin Burgoyne, Wakefield manager Dave Ellegood, Somerville manager James McConville, and Chiefs assistant coach Anthony Durkee ably assisted him. Warming up the relief pitchers were bullpen catchers Derlin Tejeda and Connor Green from the Blue Sox. For the second time a championship, game was shortened by weather in the five years of the event. Both times the Cranberry League has been on the losing end. In 2013, they lost to the Yawkey League 7-6 in a three-inning game called because of fog. All three games featured good baseball and entertained the crowds all day long. In the fifth year of the event, that features the best players from the four Greater Boston amateur baseball leagues, once again displayed the best baseball talent in Eastern Massachusetts. Thanks to the hard work of Joe Paolucci of the Cranberry League, Walt Bentson of the Park League, Rick DeAngelis of the Intercity League, and Marc DesRoches of the Yawkey League this event was again a success. Also thanks to the Kevin Burgoyne and Orazio Azzarello of the Melrose Americans for hosting the event. In addition, thanks to the Melrose DPW who got the field ready for play for all three games.
