Alibrandis win game one, 5-2

Lexington – The Alibrandis Baseball Club won game one of its semifinal series against Lexington 5-2 to take a 1-0 series lead. Teddy Dziuba drove in three runs, two with a double in the three-run fifth, and the final run on a fielder’s choice in the seventh.  His double in the fifth gave the Alibrandis a 3-0 lead. Anthony Delprete (1-0) started and pitched four shutout innings for the Alibrandis. He pitched three 1-2-3 innings only allowing baserunners in the second inning. The veteran right hander gave up two singles in the second, but also struck out the side. Delprete finished with six strikeouts, four of them looking. In the fourth the Alibrandis loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and an error. Bobby Barrett singled through the left side to drive in Mike Maguire with the first run. That was all the Alibrandis would get that inning as Lexington starter Alsis Herrera struck out Gordie Gronkowski and Matt Henriksen and then retired Jamill Moquette on an infield popup to end the threat. Lexington mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but came up short only scoring twice. Dan Graham started the rally with a double to left. After an out, Jeff Vigurs reached on a two-base error, but Graham could only go to third. Dom Zaher followed with an RBI single to center scoring Graham and putting Blue Sox on first and third with one out. Ross Curley drove a ball deep to right center, but Maguire made the catch for the second out, it was deep enough for Vigurs to come home to make the score 5-2. Herrera pitched four plus innings for the Sox. The lefty gave up six hits, walked none and struck out five in taking the loss.d Game two of the series is Friday night at Malden Catholic’s Maplewood Field with first pitch scheduled at 8:00 PM.        

Reds & Alibrandis Move on to Semi-Finals with Sunday Wins

The #3 Watertown Reds and #4 Alibrandis took series ending Sunday night wins and will now move on to the ICL’s final four. The Reds beat the #6 Andre Chiefs 10-3 and will now meet the #2 Wakefield Merchants with game one of that series scheduled for Trum Field in Somerville on Tuesday night at 8:15 PM. Alibrandis took the rubber game of their series with the #5 Reading Bulldogs 7-3. They will meet the #1 Blue Sox in game one in Lexington on Tuesday at 8:00 PM. At Maplewood, the Reds came back from a 3-1 fourth inning deficit to eliminate the Chiefs in two games. Will Brennan had a homer and three RBI’s and Ben Johnston a double and three RBI’s to lead the way. Dan Chaisson, Sean Callahan-Montague and Josh Miller all added doubles, and Kyle LaVigne had two hits for the Reds. Nate Espelin tossed four scoreless innings in relief of Nate Beck to record the win. Evan Walsh took the loss for the Chiefs. Matt Nuzzo’s first inning solo homer gave the Chiefs the early lead. Alibrandis got a complete game five-hitter from Sean Sullivan to lead them to the 7-3 win in a game played at Victory Field in Watertown. Dave Lightbody and Bobby Barrett both launched two-run doubles, and Teddt Dziuba had a two RBI single, for Alibrandis. Zac Talis drove in two of the three Reading runs with a double. Sullivan struck out two and walked just one. Cam Lanzilli took the loss for the Bulldogs.

Barrett Slam Gets Alibrandis Even with Bulldogs, Both Series Resume on Sunday at 8

Bobby Barrett (pictured) hit a grand slam in the top of the eighth inning, to break a 1-1 tie, and then Alibrandis held on to beat the Reading Bulldogs 5-2 at Morelli Field. With the win, Alibrandis tied the series up at one game each. Tyler Cedeno drove in Mason Campbell in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game up for the Bulldogs. Lew Jensen and James Cramphin combined to get the win for Alibrandis.  Jack Theriault took the loss in the eighth inning in relief of Ben Gottesman. Gottesman allowed only four hits in his seven innings. The deciding game three of the Reading-Alibrandis series will be now played at Victory Field in Watertown on Sunday at 7:00 PM. It was originally scheduled at Morelli Field but has been moved to the artificial surface at Victory due to wet grounds in Melrose. Game two of the Andre Chiefs-Watertown Reds series will also be played on Sunday at Maplewood/Malden Catholic at 8:00 PM. If a third game is needed, it would be played in Watertown on Monday night. The Reds lead that series 1-0. The #1 seeded Lexington Blue Sox and #2 seeded Wakefield Merchants await their opponents in the best of five semi-finals which are scheduled to begin on Tuesday. The Blue Sox will host game one at Lexington High at 8:00 PM while the Merchants will play at Trum Field in Somerville at 8:15 PM.

Bulldogs & Reds Take First Round Series Leads

The Reading Bulldogs got a complete game five-hitter from Jack Burke and shutout Alibrnadis 6-0 to take a 1-0 series lead on Thursday night at Morelli Field. Jeff Roy had three hits, including two doubles, and Zac Talis drove in two runs to lead the Reading offense. Tyler Cedeno, Joey Hodapp and Johnny Hayes drove in the other Reading runs. Burke struck out six and didn’t issue a walk. Brian Tanguy look the loss for Alibrandis. In Watertown, the Reds scored three times in each of the third and fourth innings, erasing a 1-0 Andre Chiefs lead, and went on to a 6-3 series opening win at Victory Field. Worth Walrod went 6.1 innings to get the win with help from Dan Haverty in the seventh inning. Ben Johnston had two hits and two RBI’s, Kyle LaVigne a triple among his two hits and two RBI, and Will Brennan a two RBI triple, to lead the Reds’ at the plate. Johhny Welch had three hits and two RBI for the Chiefs. Mitchell Clegg went four innings and suffered the loss, despite striking out six. Game two of the Reading-Alibrandis series will be played on Friday night at Morelli Field at 8:00 PM. The second game of the Chiefs-Reds series will be on Sunday at 8:00 PM at Maplewood/Malden Catholic.

Chiefs Beat Americans in Play-In Game 12-3, First Round Begins on Thursday

The Andre Chiefs spotted the Melrose Americans a 3-0 first inning lead, then scored 12 unanswered runs, on the way to a 12-3 play-in game win at soggy Maplewood Park on Wednesday night. With the win the Chiefs advance to the first round of the ICL’s playoffs against the Watertown Reds. Game one of that best of three series will be played on Thursday night at Victory Field at 7:30 PM. The Reading Bulldogs-Albrandis series will also begin on Thursday night. The first game will be played at Morelli Field in Melrose at 8:00 PM. The Americans-Chiefs game was twice delayed by rain and lightning. The game started on time at 8:00 PM, was halted twice in the top of the first inning, and finally resumed at 9:50 PM. The Chiefs got a three-run first inning homer and seven RBI’s from Ben Waldrip, who went 4-4, to lead the win. Tim Dunphy took over for Jared Freni after the the second rain delay and proceeded to throw 6.1 innings of shutout ball. Tony Serino and Matt Nuzzo had two hits each for the Chiefs while Johnny Welch (single, sac fly) and Leivi Ventura (double) each had two RBI’s. UPDATED 10:20 AM: Americans-Chiefs Play-In Tonight at Maplewood 8:00 PM, Other Seeds Set

2018 ICL PLAYOFF SEEDS: 1. Lexington Blue Sox 2. Wakefield Merchants 3. Watertown Reds 4. Alibrandis 5. Reading Bulldogs 6. Melrose Americans/Andre Chiefs (Winner of Wednesday’s Play-In Game) The Lexington Blue Sox, Wakefield Merchants, Watertown Reds, Alibrandis and the Reading Bulldogs have all secured playoff berths with Lexington and Wakefield earning first round byes. The Melrose Americans and Andre Chiefs, who both finished the regular season at 13-15 and split their season series 2-2, will meet in a one game play-in tonight (Wednesday) at 8:00 PM at Maplewood Park on the campus of Malden Catholic. The Chiefs won a coin toss on Monday that determined the home team. The winner of the Americans-Chiefs game will become the #6 seed and move on to play the #3 seeded Watertown Reds at Victory Field in game one of a best of three series on Thursday night at 7:30 PM. Game two of that series will be played on Sunday at a time and location TBA. The Alibrandis-Reading series will also begin on Thursday night at Morelli Field at 8:00 PM, with Alibrandis being the home team. Alibrandis took the #4 seed by virtue of their 10-1 win over Reading on Monday night. Game two of this series will be played on Friday at 8:00 PM at Morelli Field. The ICL’s best of five semi-final series are expected to begin early next week with Lexington and Wakefield hosting the opening games. In the final regular season game that was played on Tuesday night, the Malden Maddogs held off a late rally and edged the Reading Bulldogs 10-9.

Reds Edge Chiefs, Alibrandis-Bulldogs Tie, Royals Sweep Maddogs

The Watertown Reds scored an unearned run in bottom of the sixth inning and went on to edge the Andre Chiefs 4-3 at Victory Field. Nate Esplin (1-0) got the win in relief and Tim Dunphy (2-2) took the loss after Chiefs’ starter Evan Walsh worked into the fifth, striking out seven. Justin Forman had two hits and scored the winning run for the Reds. The Reading Bulldogs and Alibrandis fought to a nine inning 4-4 tie at Morton Field. Reading got a homer and two RBI’s from Zac Tallis and a double and a couple of RBI’s from Joey Hodapp. Chuck Erickson hit his first homer of the year for Alibrandis. The Somerville Royals took both ends of a doubleheader, 5-2 and 10-9, from the Malden Maddogs at Trum Field. Rob Caggiano had three hits and three RBI’s in the opener as Soren Hanson (2-2) struck out nine to pick up the win. Nick Valdario led the way in the nightcap with a homer, three hits, and three RBI’s.

Americans, Bulldogs & Blue Sox Take Friday Night Wins

Dave Center had a triple and four RBI’s to lead the Americans to a 17-3 win over the Malden Maddogs in Melrose on Friday night. Kyle Cortese drove in three runs and Chris Hopkins had a double and three hits for the Americans. Mike Peters (2-1) chalked up with win, pitching two innings in relief of starter Jamie Weiss. Mike Taylor homered and Chris Bosco and Johnny Hayes had two hits each to lead the Reading Bulldogs to a 7-2 win over the Somerville Royals at Trum Field. Jack Theriault (3-1) struck out nine in 6.2 innings to grab the win. Nick Vadario, Adam Johnson and Rob Caggiano each had two hits for the Royals, who outhit the Bulldogs 10-7 but saw their pitching issue nine walks in the game. Joey Hodapp added a double and Shane Nowak had two RBI’s for the Bulldogs. In Lexington, the Blue Sox used the long ball to conclude their regular season with a nine game winning streak when they edged Alibrandis 5-4. Cam Meyer hit his first career homer, a two-run shot, that tied the score in the fourth inning. Justin Silvestro hit his second of the season to give Lexington a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Mike Maguire, Teddy Dziuba, and David Lightbody each drove in runs for Alibrandis. Tony Annino (4-0) earned his fourth win, pitching four innings, giving up four hits, and striking out four, while Nick Godfroy picked up the save.

Merchants Clinch Playoff Bye, Alibrandis Win Slugfest, 13-12

The Wakefield Merchants clinched second place and a first round playoff bye with a 2-0 win over the Americans on Thursday night in Melrose. Mike Andrews (4-1) got his fourth win of the year with a complete game five-hitter, striking out one. Dillon Koster and Joe Barry drove in the runs and Brendan Barry had three hits for the Merchants. Malcolm Nachmanoff had two of the Americans’ hits. Chris Mitchell (3-3) pitched well but took the loss. Alibrandis utilized two big innings, picking up five runs in the first then adding six runs in the sixth, to go on and beat the Reading Bulldogs 13-12 at Maplewood. The Bulldogs scored in every inning but still came up a run shy. Mike Maguire (3-4, 2 RBI’s), Teddy Dziuba and Bobby Barrett led the way at the plate for Alibrndis as Sean Sullivan (1-1-1) picked up his first ICL win in relief. Joey Hodapp had three hits and Tyler Cedeno three RBI’s for the Bulldogs.

Americans, Alibrandis, Merchants & Bulldogs Win on Wednesday

John Jennings had three RBi’s to back the pitching of Shawn Smeglin (3-2) when the Americans beat the Malden Maddogs 10-1 at Morelli Field. Will Shackelford added two hits and a couple of RBI’s and Charlie Huegi scored three runs for the Americans. At Maplewood, Brian Tanguy (3-1) allowed just one hit in five innings, and along with three relievers, allowed just one baserunner in the game, when Alibrandis whacked the Andre Chiefs 8-0. Mark Adessa had a three run homer and five RBI’s for Alibrandis. In Wakefield, Joseph Maguire (6-2) out-dueled Paul Covelle, tossing a six hit shutout, when the Merchants edged the Somerville Royals 1-0. Mike Mangonian’s single in the fourth inning drove home Joe Barry with game’s only run. Covelle (2-3) allowed only two hits and struck out nine in the tough luck loss. Ben Gottesman (3-0) fired a complete game six-hitter and struck out six to lead the Reading Bulldogs to a 4-1 win over the Reds in Watertown. Chris Bosco with three hits, and Shane Nowak and Tyler Cedeno with two hits each, led the Bulldogs offense.
