Blue Sox Win in Wakefield, Royals Shutout Trojans, Bulldogs Top Americans

Thomas Russo had three hits, Ross Curley and Dorian Rojas two each, and Justin Silvestro and Alex Voitik a couple of RBI’s apiece, when the Lexington Blue Sox beat the Merchants 10-2 in Wakefield. The Blue Sox broke open a 2-2 fifth inning tie by scoring three times in the the sixth and then added five more runs in the seventh. Borja Jones-Berasaluce (1-0) picked up the win in relief of veteran Matt Karis. In Somerville, Wyatt Stanley (1-0), Paul Pollano, and Soren Hanson combined on a two-hitter when the Royals edged the Arlington Trojans 1-0 at Trum Field. Sean Harrington drove in Brian Campbell in the bottom of the fourth inning with the game’s only run. At Endicott College, Colby Morris (2-1) went six innings to get the win, and Max Mardany picked up his second save, when the Reading Bulldogs topped the Melrose Americans 3-1.  Ryan Wolfsberg knocked in a couple of runs for Reading and Chris Bosco drove in the third run. Kyle Autilio (0-2) pitched well for the Americans but took the loss.

ICL’s Annual Jerie DeAngelis Memorial Day of Baseball Starts at 11:00 AM on Saturday

Jerie was and will always remain a vital part of the Blue Sox organization. In recognition and honor of Jerie, the annual Day of Baseball features all  eight Intercity League teams. Jerie DeAngelis’ imprint is evident, and her unconquerable spirit continues to exist and flourish, throughout the Blue Sox Baseball Program. The design of the uniforms, hats, sweatsuits, windbreakers, tee shirts, team bags, and other gear are Jerie’s creation. The Blue Sox logos, for which there are many, were designed by Jerie with precision. The Blue Sox’s 1998 Intercity league Championship Rings bear her unique imprint. Since the inception of the Blue Sox in 1995, Jerie produced the Blue Sox game programs for all home games. More importantly, Jerie cared about and helped the Blue Sox players off the diamond. She assisted and advised players with their career decisions, she fed players at planned and impromptu dinners and hosted team parties. Friendships were formed between Jerie and players’ wives, mothers and girl friends. Those bonds will never be broken. In addition to her significant and meaningful work with the Blue Sox, Jerie had a passion for amateur athletics in Lexington. She was a Lexington High School Basketball and Baseball Booster and was instrumental in the Lexington Babe Ruth program. Jerie was also a Trustee of Curry College. She assisted numerous high school athletes with their college plans and financial aid decisions. In 1998 she was the recipient of the Lexington High School Basketball Boosters Award in recognition of her outstanding support of that program. Curry College also awarded Jerie an honorary Doctor of Education degree at its 1998 Commencement. In 1995, the Blue Sox set out to put together an organization which would represent the Town of Lexington in a first class manner in the competitive Intercity League. That goal was achieved thanks in large part to Jerie’s work and concern. Her graphic designs, advice and counsel evidence her commitment to the Town. Along with Dick Perry, Larry Kohler, Nick Santosuosso and Rick DeAngelis, Jerie was an important part of the efforts to improve the Center Field Baseball facility. Jerie was a key contributor to the Lexington Lights Project at the center Field Diamond. 

Merchants Edge Royals in 8th, Sox-Reds Tie, Annual ICL Raffle is Tonight in Woburn

The Wakefield Merchants scored a run in the top of the eighth to take a 7-6 extra inning win over the Somerville Royals at Trum Field. Bobby Losanno, Mike Sorrentino, Mark Webber, Chris Butler and Vin Nardone, all had two hits each for the Merchants. George Crowley and Luke Ronchi both had a couple of hits and two RBI’s each for the Royals. Spencer Meyer (1-1) picked up the win in relief of Joseph Maguire. In Watertown, the Lexington Blue Sox and the Reds played to a 1-1 tie. The game was halted after 8 1/2 innings due to a curfew. Bill Sullivan went the distance for the Reds and allowed eight hits while striking out nine. The Blue Sox trio of Ryan Filipowoicz, Rob DeFranco, and Jeff Blount, surrendered only five hits and struck out seven. Chris Lanzilli gave the Reds a 1-0 fourth inning lead when he plated Will Brennan (single) with a fielder’s choice. The Blue Sox tied the game in the top of the fifth on singles from Thomas Russo, Jeff Costello, and Aaron Barbosa. There are no ICL games on the Friday schedule due to the annual Raffle/Chinese Food Buffet that will take place at the Woburn Sons of Italy starting at 6:00 PM.  

Xirinachs Throws 12K 1-Hitter for Merchants, Chiefs Beat Reds 3-1

Steve Xirinachs (1-1)  threw a one-hitter, striking out a dozen, when the Wakefield Merchants shutout the Arlington Trojans 1-0 at Walsh Field on Wednesday. Mike Sorrentino drove in Bobby Losanno with the only run of the game with a third inning single. At Maplewood, Jared Freni threw a seven strikeout three-hitter, out dueling Dante Padovani, when the Andre Chiefs beat the Watertown Reds 3-1. Johnny Welch drove in two of the Chiefs runs with a first inning homer. Tony Serino drove in the other run with a RBI single. Will Brennan had two of the Reds hits .

DeDonato’s 7 RBI’s Lead Reading to 14-2 Win at Trum

Mike DeDonato had a homer, two doubles,  and an ICL season high seven RBI’s, to lead the Reading Bulldogs to a 14-2 win over the Somerville Royals at Trum Field. Darren Hartwell with three hits, and Johnny Hayes and Chris Seidl with two each, led the Bulldogs’ 13 hit assault. Jack Theriault (1-2) went five innings to get the win. George Crowley had a couple of hits, including a double, for the Royals. On Wednesday, the Arlington Trojans visit the Wakefield Merchants at Walsh Field at 6:00 PM and the Andre Chiefs host the Watertown Reds at Maplewood (Malden Cathoilc) at 8:15 PM.

Americans Walk Off with 7-6 Win, Keskinidis Throws 4-Hitter, Chiefs’ Clegg Beats Blue Sox

Malcolm Nachmanoff had two hits, including a double, and three RBI’s, to lead the Americans to a wild 7-6 comeback win over the Watertown Reds at Morelli Field. The Americans scored four times in bottom of the seventh inning to take the walk off win. The Reds tallied three runs in top of the inning to break a 3-3 tie and take a 6-3 lead. Ronnie Luke (1-0) got the win when he recorded the last out in Reds’ seventh. Hunter Boyce added two RBI’s for the now 4-2 Americans. At Endicott College,  Steve Keskinidis (1-0) threw a complete game four-hitter to get the Wakefield Merchants past the Reading Bulldogs 4-1.  Bobby Losanno had three hits, including a triple, and Mark Webber had a double and a single, and Mike Sorrentino recorded a double and a couple of RBI’s  for the Merchants. Darren Hartwell had two of the Bulldogs four hits as Colby Morris (0-1) took the loss. The Chiefs broke open a 1-1 game, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring six fifth inning runs, on the way to beating the Lexington Blue Sox 7-3 at Maplewood. Mitchell Clegg (1-0) scattered three hits and struck out seven in six innings to chalk up the win. Mike Gedman hit a two run homer and Johnny Welch and Mike Andre had RBI’s to lead the Chiefs. Chris Law (0-1), in relief of Drew Leenhouts, took the loss.

Mitchell Improves to 3-0 for Melrose, Blue Sox & Reds Get 2-0 Wins on Sunday

Chris Mitchell upped his record to 3-0 when the Americans beat the Somerville Royals 9-3 in Melrose. Will Shakleford drove in four runs, Chris Hopkins and Charlie Heugi each had three hits, and Malcolm Machmanoff had a homer and two RBI’s to lead the Melrose 15 hit attack. James McConville and Jake Cintolo had homers for the Royals. Mitchell struck out six and allowed six hits in his six innings of work. At Endicott, the Lexington Blue Sox shutout the Reading Bulldogs 2-0 with Kelvin Guzman (2-0) allowing four hits in six innings to record the win. Jeff Costello scored both Lexington runs. In the first he singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Voitik. In the fifth Costello singled, stole second and scored on consecutive throwing errors by Reading.  Darren Hartwell had two hits for Reading. In Sunday’s other game, the Watertown Reds went to 6-1 with a 2-0 win over the Arlington Trojans at Summer Street Field.

Blue Sox Edge Trojans 4-3 in Only Thursday Contest

Brady Furdon (1-0) went six innings to pick up the win, and veteran Matt Karis recorded the save, when the Blue Sox overcame a 3-1 third inning deficit to edge the Arlington Trojans 4-3 in Lexington. Thomas Russo provided the game winner when he delivered Julian Alvarez with a fifth inning sacrifice fly. Alex Irwin (0-1) took the loss for Arlington. On Friday, the Trojans host the Somerville Royals at 7:00 PM at Summer Street Field and the Blue Sox visit the Watertown Reds at Victory Field in a 7:45 PM start.

Freni Gets 3rd Career No-Hitter in 3-0 Chiefs Win, Merchants Beat Bulldogs at Walsh

Four time ICL Pitcher of the Year Jared Freni threw his third career no-hitter when the Andre Chiefs beat the Melrose Americans 3-0 at Morelli Field on Wednesday. Freni struck out 14 and did not allow a ball to leave the infield. The Chiefs scored all of their runs in the top of the fourth inning when Mike Gedman and Peter Copa had RBI singles. Kyle Autilio (0-1) allowed only four hits, all in the Chiefs’ fourth, in his six innings of work, Freni, who now has a career 62-12 ICL record, previously threw no-hitters on June 12, 2013 in a 2-0 win against the Watertown Reds at Victory Field and on June 2, 2015 in a 3-0 win vs the Reading Bulldogs at Endicott College. In Wakefield, the Merchants got two hits each from Bobby Losanno, Scott Searles, and Chris Butler on the way to an 8-5 win over the Reading Bulldogs at Walsh Field, Butler recorded three RBI’s and Losanno added a triple. Greg Johnson (2-0) picked up the win with Joseph Maguire chalking up his first save. Mike DeDonato went a perfect 4 for 4 and Darren Hartwell had three hits for the Bulldogs. The Lexington Blue Sox host the Arlington Trojans at 8:00 PM in the only ICL game that is scheduled on Thursday.

Sullivan K’s 14 for Reds, Chiefs & Bulldogs Gain Monday Night Wins

2016 ICL Pitcher of the Year Bill Sullivan (2-0) struck out 14, and allowed just four hits, when the Watertown Reds beat the Blue Sox 4-1 in Lexington. The 5-1 Reds scored all of their runs in the top of third inning off Jimmy Hill (0-2) on RBI’s from Casey Santos Ocampo, Will Brennan, Dan Chaisson and Mike Samko. Julian Alvarez drove in the only Lexington run when the Blue Sox took a 1-0 first inning lead. Josh Desai (1-0) and Andrew Chin combined on a four-hitter to lead the Andre Chiefs to a 3-1 win over the Melrose Americans at Maplewood. Chin went four innings, striking out four, and allowing four hits, while Desai didn’t surrender a hit and struck out four over the final three innings. Matt Nuzzo, with a solo homer, Mike Barbati and Shane Stande had the Chiefs’ RBI’s. The Americans’ duo of Shawn Smeglin and Zeke Berg only allowed three hits. At Endicott College, veteran Johnny Hayes went 3 for 3, and Darren Hartwell added a couple of hits, when the Reading Bulldogs beat the Arlington Trojans 2-1 in eight innings. Colby Morris went the first five innings, striking out five, for the Bulldogs before giving way to Alex Mandrus and finally Max Mardany (1-0) , who went the final two innings to record the win. Andrew Hamel went the first six innings for the Trojans, before yielding to Evan Walsh (0-2) who took the loss. The Bulldogs outhit the Trojans 10-8 in the game and stole four bases. The Somerville Royals host the Chiefs at Trum Field at 8:15 PM in the only ICL game that is scheduled for Tuesday.
